Wordpress plugins

September 21st, 2007 by Robyn

I’ve been assisting Skip over at bloggerguy2 with some of the finer points of Wordpress. Look out blogging world. As always, when showing someone the way, you end up learning something yourself. In this case, I learned that TinyMCE Advanced plugin is a very stable product that gives the Wordpress editor a Word processing look and feel. The newest version even automatically imports whatever styles you have in your style.css file. Nice. So, if you’re looking for a very useable Wordpress enhancement, check out the TinyMCE Advanced.  I haven’t explored the extent of what it can do, but that will come. In particular, the “Edit CSS Style” tool looks interesting as does the “Cleanup Messy Code” tool.

Styling first letters

September 17th, 2007 by Robyn

This post is just a test for using a drop cap and a first letter capital. I’ve created three new styles in the stylesheet file and added span tags around the target letters. This method of using the stylesheet works best because it gives you control over where you use it. This method is dependent on what fonts the user has on their system. To use really fancy letters, you’d need images and that requires making 26 graphics - one for each letter. Read the rest of this entry »

not a blogger

August 29th, 2007 by Robyn

Obviously I’m not a blogger. I look around at blogs and amaze at how people have so much to say. Mostly about nothing. There’s probably a lot I could rant about, but at this time of the evening, I’m just going to kick back with a cold one.

August is nearly done. That’s a cue for an entry about Time …

Some other time.

Tweaking for browsers

July 23rd, 2007 by Robyn

Well, it’s been eventful. Still (and constantly) figuring out Wordpress. I admire much of its simplicity — easier than Joomla. I had trouble with getting IE6 and current browsers to render the same (big surprise). Thanks to the support forums at wordpress.org, I figured out that I needed to create a stylesheet for IE6, put the “If IE 6″ statement in the header, and make sure all the linking to the stylesheets was accurate.  I know there are different ways of doing it, but I chose the way that I could understand the quickest. It seems to be working, so if it works, don’t fix it.

The biggest frustration was cleaning up duplicate code from the original stylesheet. Well, maybe the biggest frustration was Theo — trying to help.

So, now for a well-deserved cup of coffee.
